Smartphones and Digital Cameras – The Yin and Yang of the Photo Market – Part 2

On average, there are 77 photos that are taken with a digital camera, and only 34 photos, taken with a smartphone. The more photos a person makes, the more likely it is that they used a digital camera. People who take a lower amount of pictures per months are using their smart phones to shoot pictures. iPhone users do, interestingly, take more photos than Android users. Reasons for this are perhaps found in a better selection of apps, as well as synchronizing photo editing and sharing between iPhone, MacBook, iPad and iPod.

The same applies to the distinction between digital compact and SLR cameras. Users with SLR cameras will make more pictures with an average of 129 to 44 photos so they also clearly use their cameras more. Some reasons for this behaviour include the larger investment, and the ignited passion for the proclaimed Queen of the Cameras.

Nevertheless it also shows that it is not about an either-or behaviour, since most of the users who prefer to use one device, also make use of the other device. About 60% of each digital camera or smart phone user will also use their other device for shooting photos.

But the user is more certainly more traditional when it comes to editing photos, remaining faithful to the computer as a working medium. 83% of users rely primarily on large programs like Photoshop, with only 15% of the user is working directly on the smartphone as a second device. However it needs to be noted also that only half of all users edit just a quarter of their photos at all before they are stored or shared with others.

Kids (or even cats)?

Children, more than anything else, have a positive effect on the spontaneous making of photos with iPhone & Co.. Users without children in their household take on average only 30 photos per month, while people with children are shooting already 42 photos per month. The kids are a popular motif and do not stand still for a long time on one place – with this in mind, the flexibility and handling of a smartphone has a definite advantage over the use of a regular digital camera.

Great times are ahead for this market because of modern users. Not only is our daily life fast-paced, but you still have to quickly create fond memorabilia that fits into the grandparents’ picture frame but can also be uploaded to sites like Facebook etc. for friends and the rest of the family.

Users love the flexibility of a smart phone, which they carry around constantly anyway, but rely also on the excellent quality of a digital camera when it comes to events that are ahead and in which case the camera then again fits into their pockets.
